Summary

Listening length: 12 hours

In a modern and twisty retelling of Jane Eyre, a young woman must question everything she thinks she knows about love, loyalty, and murder。

Jane has lost everything: job, mother, relationship, even her home。 A friend calls to offer an unusual deal—a cottage above the crashing surf of Big Sur on the estate of his employer, Evan Rochester。 In return, Jane will tutor his teenage daughter。 She accepts。

But nothing is quite as it seems at the Rochester estate。 Though he’s been accused of murdering his glamorous and troubled wife, Evan Rochester insists she drowned herself。 Jane is skeptical, but she still finds herself falling for the brilliant and secretive entrepreneur and growing close to his daughter。

And yet her deepening feelings for Evan can’t disguise dark suspicions aroused when a ghostly presence repeatedly appears in the night’s mist and fog。 Jane embarks on an intense search for answers and uncovers evidence that soon puts Evan’s innocence into question。 She’s determined to discover what really happened that fateful night, but what will the truth cost her?

Loved this modern retelling of the Jane Eyre story and the motorcycle inside of a horse。

Lindsay Marcott is a master at writing suspense and this engrossing thrriller is no exception。 If you've read any of the several thousand other Goodreads reveiews you know it's a retelling of "Jane Eyre。" I believe Charotte Bronte would be delighted by Ms。 Marcott's sophisticated style and talent for making characters come alive。 It's a genuine page-turner or, if you read on a device, a page-swiper。 Lindsay Marcott is a master at writing suspense and this engrossing thrriller is no exception。 If you've read any of the several thousand other Goodreads reveiews you know it's a retelling of "Jane Eyre。" I believe Charotte Bronte would be delighted by Ms。 Marcott's sophisticated style and talent for making characters come alive。 It's a genuine page-turner or, if you read on a device, a page-swiper。 。。。more

EntertainingThis is an entertaining retelling of Rebecca。 The writing was ok, the characters are ok, the plot was ok, and the ending was ok。 Worth a quick mindless read。

Excellent Read Greatly enjoyed this。 Picked it up to take a break from my normal genre, and I’m glad I did。 So engaging。 One of those you don’t want to put down, but read straight through。 I keep promising myself just one more chapter…and than the inevitable pops up-“Ohh, and than what happened???” Lol

A modern retelling of Jane Eyre。 Well, I've never gotten around to reading Jane Eyre so I don't know how close to the original this is but as a stand alone story it was brilliant。 Just scary enough that I could still fall asleep alone in the apartment。The love story obviously felt a bit forced。 But I feel that is the case with most romantic books, especially from the Jane Eyre era。 Always the poor woman who falls madly involve with the rich gentleman and they live happily ever after。 This with a A modern retelling of Jane Eyre。 Well, I've never gotten around to reading Jane Eyre so I don't know how close to the original this is but as a stand alone story it was brilliant。 Just scary enough that I could still fall asleep alone in the apartment。The love story obviously felt a bit forced。 But I feel that is the case with most romantic books, especially from the Jane Eyre era。 Always the poor woman who falls madly involve with the rich gentleman and they live happily ever after。 This with a twist of a dead crazy ex wife。 Murdered by her husband or suicide? Five things about Mrs Rochester’s Ghost by Lindsay Marcott 4/5⭐️s1。 I loved this book! Loved it! I wanted to give it 5 stars but I’m giving it 4 so let me address that first because it will be a deal breaker for some readers。 I won’t include spoilers so read on unafraid。 In this masterful (and I do mean masterful) and lovingly respectful but also totally original reimagining of Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre - Bertha/Beatrice/Beatie June gets a significant voice。 That’s a great thing! Bertha/et al names has needed a voice since Bronte first denied her one。 BUT Bertha is not sane。 Not in Bronte’s telling and not in Marcott’s telling。 And the way Marcott’s Bertha speaks to the reader is not believable。 There’s something about it that just feels too sensational and downright unsympathetic。 All I can say is that it feels as if Marcott needed to do more research。 I get that the character needed to be in keeping with Bronte’s Bertha - violent, wild, unkempt, jealous, manipulative, observant, aware…。she is all these things but the way she vocalizes her inner thoughts is simply not done well。 2。 That being said, all else about this reworking of the tale was exquisite! And I’ve NEVER said that about a Jane Eyre retelling before。 I’ve enjoyed some。 Disliked some。 Hated a few。 I’ve never loved one, until now。 3。 I both knew what was going to happen - felt my knowledge of the original rewarded again and again as I watched familiar scenes unfold before me in entirely knew ways - and also had no idea what was going to happen! 4。 I felt, as I was reading, what it must have felt like the first time I read Jane Eyre。 I had no idea if there was a ghost or not。 I had no idea if Rochester could be trusted。 Was he honest? Gaslighting? Gah! I would decide definitively one way and then be forced to question my way into definitively deciding against myself。 I had no idea if Jane would get a happy ending or not。 I was, sometimes literally, reading on the edge of my seat and I could not read fast enough。 5。 There was a scene I was reading last night that actually scared me。 I hadn’t felt scared like that, reading, tucked up in bed, list in the story and detached from my physical surroundings in I don’t know how many years or decades。 In so many ways this book is magic! 。。。more

Jane Eyre is one of my favorite books。 I wanted to love this one, but it was not great。 Jane is supposed to be smart and caring。 This Jane was just a mess who didn't know what to do with her life。 I guess this was supposed to be like, well all millenials must be like this。 I am here to say that is not true。 I do not mind when people do retellings well, but this one wasn't suited for me。 I thought the writing was fun, albeit it was just not my cup of tea with the story, Jane Eyre is one of my favorite books。 I wanted to love this one, but it was not great。 Jane is supposed to be smart and caring。 This Jane was just a mess who didn't know what to do with her life。 I guess this was supposed to be like, well all millenials must be like this。 I am here to say that is not true。 I do not mind when people do retellings well, but this one wasn't suited for me。 I thought the writing was fun, albeit it was just not my cup of tea with the story, 。。。more

Mexican gothic-esqueIt was a good book with an unexpected ending。 If you like Mexican gothic, It had that kind of “feeling” to it, although the story line is quite different。 You’re not sure who the main character can trust which makes the relationships tricky and hard to navigate。 I would read this author again。

I have never read Jane Eyre, but it has been on my to-read list for a while considering it’s notoriety, so I thought this might be an interesting read before I read the original。 Given that, and reading through some reviews, I think this gives me a much different perspective as I’m not comparing this to anything。 As a stand along book, I really enjoyed it。 I really liked the back and forth between characters, and I was actually fascinated by Beatrice’s side of the story。 I found the author’s wor I have never read Jane Eyre, but it has been on my to-read list for a while considering it’s notoriety, so I thought this might be an interesting read before I read the original。 Given that, and reading through some reviews, I think this gives me a much different perspective as I’m not comparing this to anything。 As a stand along book, I really enjoyed it。 I really liked the back and forth between characters, and I was actually fascinated by Beatrice’s side of the story。 I found the author’s word choice for Beatrice’s dialogue was creative and interesting。 The parts I did not like was the hot and heavy rapid descent into “I love you forever, please wait for me” love story between Jane and Mr。 Rochester。 Or the sudden aptitude Jane seemed to somehow have for mentoring and tutoring wayward teenagers。 It felt really corny and superficial。 I also felt the end of the book was super rushed into the last couple chapters and the climax came and went in the blink of an eye。 There were a lot of plot points and characters that just didn’t make sense to me and seemed useless to the storyline- like Lillies。 Overall though I found the book intriguing and I looked forward to picking it up each night。 I loved the setting of Big Sur and Carmel as I’m familiar with that area and had fun revisiting some “Big Little Lies” vibes。 I wonder if the subjects I disliked and I enjoyed were both heightened by my having not read the original Jane Eyre, since I seem to be opposite from most reviews。 。。。more

I wandered into this book kind of by accident, it was a free Prime first read。 I think I would not have bothered with it as I usually don't really like modern retellings of classic novels, but somehow I misread the page and thought it was written by a black writer and that piqued my interest。 Well, it wasn't。I stuck with it till the end partly because I wanted to see how the character of Mrs Rochester resolved, and partly because I liked the Adele character, named Sophia here。 Also the chapters I wandered into this book kind of by accident, it was a free Prime first read。 I think I would not have bothered with it as I usually don't really like modern retellings of classic novels, but somehow I misread the page and thought it was written by a black writer and that piqued my interest。 Well, it wasn't。I stuck with it till the end partly because I wanted to see how the character of Mrs Rochester resolved, and partly because I liked the Adele character, named Sophia here。 Also the chapters in the voice of the insane wife were kind of mesmerizing。 It was at least well written and kept my attention。Maybe it was me reading too fast but I missed the connection between Jane seeing a painting, and then talking about it as a Modigliani - how did she know that? And one or two other times I also thought, "how did she know that?'In sum I think it was a three star idea with four star execution。 。。。more

What a fun book!I really enjoyed the way the author wove the present and past throughout the book。 A fun book with twists and turns。

Lots of funI loved that the plot kept moving quickly and it kept forcing me to change my mind about whether or not Mr。 Rochester had killed his wife。 There were things that were hard to believe, but that didn't detract from my enjoyment of the book。 Great for a summer read! While the author stays close to Charlotte Bronte’s story line and she updates the scenarios, the overall tone is strained。 The main character lacks the depth of Jane Eyre。 I did greatly enjoy the Big Sur setting!

It reminded me more of Rebecca, than anything else。 It was ok。

Fun read with lots twists and turnsThe read was slow to come together but then draws you in like a good suspense novel should。Worth the read!

ThrillerThis novel only pays a passing note to Jane Eyre- the handsome Mr Rochester and the mystery of the mad wife。 But a modern day setting, with Rochester a tech entrepreneur。 Jane is suitably less flamboyant and not totally believable。 But a good read。

Non stop excitement from the beginningThe story is captivating。 The story starts leading you in one direction and when you think you know what is going to happen things turn on another direction。 The writing is thoughtful and helps you visualize the characters and events。 I recommend this to anyone。

I can’t decide on a rating yet。 At times, I thought it was a bit silly and like a Mills and Boons。 Parts of it felt like brilliant writing, and then it seemed rushed and basic。 I love Jane Eyre, but I’m not precious about a retelling of it- I found it an interesting modern adaptation。 This Jane, however, was a bit too gagging for it in a stupid high school romance way。 Did I enjoy it though? Yes I did, like a guilty pleasure。

Gothic Intrigue In a Rebecca sort of way, this book swirls romance, mental stress, paranormal activities and surprise parenthood into an intriguing story。 Who can who trust and who do you believe when you aren’t even sure if you can believe what you have seen?

Jane is newly single and living in an apartment she can barely afford when her job as a writer on a popular tv show ends。 With her meager savings in danger of running out, Jane agrees to start work as a tutor for Evan Rochester's teenage daughter instead。The job comes at the recommendation—pleading—of a good friend who just happens to be Rochester's cousin。 The estate is huge and remote, but close enough to the city that Jane can still get a good coffee or make a yoga class。 And the surly teen s Jane is newly single and living in an apartment she can barely afford when her job as a writer on a popular tv show ends。 With her meager savings in danger of running out, Jane agrees to start work as a tutor for Evan Rochester's teenage daughter instead。The job comes at the recommendation—pleading—of a good friend who just happens to be Rochester's cousin。 The estate is huge and remote, but close enough to the city that Jane can still get a good coffee or make a yoga class。 And the surly teen she's been saddled with is charming in her own way。 But rumors swirl around Rochester and the estate。 Some say that the entrepreneur murdered his wife。 A model who was diagnosed as bipolar, Mrs。 Rochester was almost as famous for her outbursts as she was for her beauty。 And though her disappearance was suspicious, it has officially been classified as an accident。 As Jane gets to know Evan, she suspects she might be falling for him。 But certain happenings around the estate lead her to believe that not everything about Mrs。 Rochester are exactly as the widower tells it。 And as Jane begins to fall deeper in love, she has to wonder if she can truly trust Evan。 I've stated before that I'm a huge fan of Jane Eyre and Rebecca retellings。 In fact, I'm pretty much down for any new take on these twisty tales。 And that's exactly what Mrs。 Rochester's Ghost is—a modern retelling of Jane Eyre。 In this version, Jane is a bit more worldly than the original Jane。 She's been working in Hollywood, for one! So she's pretty prepared for just about any version of Evan you can imagine。 And she's not surprised when she dislikes him immediately!Chapters alternate between present-day Jane and Beatrice leading up to her own disappearance。 It's clear in Beatrice's chapters that she has issues。 And Jane herself discovers this as she digs deeper into Evan's story。 Beatrice was a supermodel with a volatile temper。 And her brother has continued to hound Evan, and now Jane, over his sister's fate。 (He's quite the unpleasant character, to be honest!)I think that every reader has a different take on Jane Eyre。 Personally, I love it。 I love Jane, who is young and innocent when we meet her but by no means truly naive; she's lived a complicated life and understands hardship。 I think she also goes into her relationship with Rochester with completely open eyes。 Rochester himself is, in my own opinion, someone trapped by circumstances made more difficult by the times he lives in。 And I think it's only in meeting Jane that he truly starts to imagine a different life。 Marcott, I think, effectively keeps the essence of all of that in her version but also gives it a modern setting and changes that make sense for the times。 The pacing is much more quick and the plotting follows today's thriller formatting rather than classic, slow burn gothic lit, but the overall heart and tone of this retelling is very true to the original。 If you're looking for a new take on Jane Eyre, this isn't really it。 But if you love the original and are interested in seeing how the story might play out present day and as a thriller, Mrs。 Rochester's Ghost gives you exactly that! 。。。more
